The Motherese Sandys Nappy is one of the best loved ‘shaped’, ‘sized’ real nappies available. It MUST be used with an outer wrap, normally a PUL wrap, although it would also work with a wool or fleece wrap if required. It comes in four sizes, with most parents using just small and large sizes. However for parents looking for a small newborn nappy or a larger toddler nappy for night time use on older children, then the xsmall newborn or xlarge Toddlerease Sandys nappies are a fantastic option. The stretch terry fabric and popper fastenings mean that some people like to use it as a trainer pull-up pant but with the added advantage of the full absorbency of a proper nappy.
It was the very first nappy to sport the front over back side closure design. Although it has been around for many years it still holds it own and is a very popular cloth nappy for a number of reasons. The clever design and excellent high tech elastic in the waist front, waist back and legs ensures all ‘poo explosions’ will remain contained, no matter the consistency or quantity ! It is a very absorbent nappy and can easily be boosted with extra inserts. The nappy closes at the sides with plastic snaps and then a waterproof wrap is used over the top.
The Motherese Sandys Nappy is made by Motherease, they are a Canadian company. They are popper fastening slim nappies available in 4 sizes, (newborn, small, large and toddlerease – toddlerease are sold separately on my site) they also come in natural cotton terry, organic cotton or now in their new revolutionary staydry material. Because it is a sized nappy and if washed and looked after correctly it is will last well and very efficiently through multiple children.
Cotton Terry– The terry is specially knitted so only cotton touches your baby’s delicate skin. The polyester is knitted into the base of the fabric to provide strength, durability and shrinkage control. The result is a very stretchy, comfortable and reliable product. Cotton terry is Motherease’s most durable fabric.
Organic Cotton – The Organic Cotton Terry is knit with 100% organic cotton touching your baby’s delicate skin. The Organic Cotton meets Global Organic Textile Standards. Polyester is knit into the base of the fabric to provide strength, durability and shrinkage control. This polyester core lengthens the lifespan of the organic cotton fabric. Organic cotton is becoming increasingly popular as it is grown without the use of harmful chemicals that have an adverse effect on the environment. Ring spun, combed cotton yarn ensures a top quality grade of cotton. Motherease Organic Cotton Terry fabric is available in its natural unbleached finish. Organic Cotton nappies will need to be pre-washed 1-2 times before use with HOT water and a good quality detergent (see Motherease detergent disclaimer).
Stay Dry Cotton – Sandy’s Dry features the well-known Natural Cotton nappy, finished with the famous Mother-ease Staydry layer inside. Mother-ease Staydry fabric is entirely different to any other staydry fabric on the market and it is made JUST for them! Mother-ease use a specially knit fabric that creates a stay dry barrier by the weave in the fabric. It allows the wetness to easily pass through, but not back. Keeping the babies skin dry to the touch. Another neat aspect is that they include a cooling yarn as well. This keeps the temperature inside the nappy lower – cooler for baby and reduces the growth of bacteria.
Sizes
- xsmall (newborn) 6 – 12 lbs / 2.7 – 5.5kg
- Small, 8-20lbs /3.6 – 9.1 kg
- Large, 20-35lbs / 9 – 15.8 kg
Sandy’s also comes in Toddlerease size which are sold separately on this site.
The XS (newborn) fits from 6lbs (2.7kg) approximately and is ideal if you are planning on using real nappies from birth and they work very well with the xsmall motherease airflow wrap or bummis duo size 1 wrap. It is a lovely fit plus wonderful at containing that explosive newborn poo! However the newborn size only fits up to 12lbs (5.5kg) meaning if you are planning on using Sandy’s nappies all the way through then you would need to purchase a set of small nappies before moving onto the larger size, this will be an expensive option if you are planning on using full time. However if you are planning on switching to a birth to potty nappy once your baby reaches around 10lbs (4.5kg) then getting some Sandy’s xsmall newborn maybe a great starting point. You can then switch to the Totsbots Bamboozle size 2 (which is a birth to potty two part nappy). Either way buying 10 to 20 xs newborn Sandy’s nappies is an expensive choice
The Small and Large Sandys Many parents will buy just the small and large sizes in their Sandy’s nappies as the fit range is from 8 – 35lbs and for the majority of children this weight range is fine. Particularly if you are planning on buying more than 5 of the Motherease Sandys Nappy as it will be much more cost effective to use just these standard two sizes. The small may be a little bulky on a newborn baby but as I have said many times on this site, newborn babies grow fast!
The XL Sandys ToddlerEase Many children are potty trained before reaching 35lbs and so will not need the Toddlease size of nappy. If however you do have a larger child the ToddleEase; which is another name for an XL Sandys, is suitable for children over 35lbs and when boosted makes a fantastic and reliable night nappy as well which lasts until your child is dry at night, which often comes a few months or even a year after they are dry in the day.
In my opinion – Sandy’s nappies were one of my favorite nappies to use. They rarely (if ever) leaked, poo or wee and were not too bulky, even when boosted at night. The took a longer to dry than the man made fibre nappies I had, but being made from a natural material was one of the major plus points for me.
My tips – I used fleece liners to keep my little ones bottom dry at night, as they did feel very wet when left on for 12 hours. I also boosted them with the generic bamboo boosters which fitted nicely into all the nappies and increased the absorbency for night time use. I also found them to be a very absorbent nappy, even before boosting.
Washing and Care – please read carefully our full ‘washing and care instructions’. All nappies and wraps must be washed according to our care instructions otherwise the manufacturers guarantee will not be valid. All new nappies must be washed before they are used. Please note that when buying a large number of cloth nappies you should just wash a few in the first instance, and check you are happy with your choice, as I cannot refund on used or washed nappies. This nappy can be tumble dried on a low heat, however it is advisable to only tumble dry occasionally as it does shorten the life of the nappy and of course cost you more.
