Elemental Joy Pocket is the new budget range from Bumgenius offering an effective cloth nappy system for families on budget without compromising on quality or safety.  Elemental Joy Cotton no fold inserts  and Elemental Joy FLAT inserts are sold separately and are a slim,  neat fit inside the pocket but you can use just about anything to stuff this nappy.  Little Lamb inserts would work well (size 2) as would prefolds, muslins and 50cm x 50cm terry squares.   

This nappy is classed as a ‘birth to potty’ so fits from around 8-35lbs / 3.6 – 15.8 kg.  It changes size by using 3 sets of poppers to adjust the length/rise at the front of the nappy and poppers to adjust around the waist just like all other Bumgenius onesize nappies and wraps.   Inside the waterproof cover there is a layer of fleece fully sewn in to form a pocket (which is where you then stuff an insert of your choice).  Although it does not have the super stretchy popper bands at the front like the Freetime, V5 Pocket and Elemental it does have stretchy waist tabs. The big difference between this nappy and the Bumgenius V5 Pocket nappy, which is almost double the price, is that the V5 comes with inserts and has an extra flap on the fleece inner pocket.

My Opinion – It is easy to buy cheap nappies on Ebay or Amazon, which are usually made in China and will not meet EU safety standards, they often do not last beyond 20 washes and cannot cope with being washed at higher temperatures.  The Elemental Joy pocket nappies are made in the USA and conform to all EU regulations and have the highest Oeko Teks safety certification. This means the poppers are securely fastened to the nappies at the safety levels required for baby clothing.  All parts of fabric production and product manufacturing are chemically safe and conform to the highest stipulated safety standards required for baby clothing. They can also cope with being washed at 60⁰ without falling apart.   

My Tips – The Elemental Joy is sold separately WITHOUT inserts so if you already have spare inserts, old terry squares etc from other nappies you can buy just the cover and save even more money.  It is worth pointing out that this nappy does not always work well on newborns, particularly if your baby is small (under 8lbs), if you have a set of these nappies and find they leak a bit at the beginning, hang in there until your baby is a bit bigger. 

Washing – wash between 40° to 60°. Please note that when buying a large number of cloth nappies you should just wash a few in the first instance, and check you are happy with your choice, as I cannot refund on used or washed nappies. This nappy can be tumble dried on a low heat, however it is advisable to only tumble dry occasionally as it does shorten the life of the nappy and of course cost you more. Do not use Ecover washing powder or Ecover liquid with your cloth nappies  Please read carefully our full ‘washing and care instructions’.  All nappies and wraps must be washed according to our care instructions otherwise the manufacturers guarantee will not be valid.

MANUFACTURERS WASHING GUIDE –

Wash: Wash warm with detergent.‡ Wash hot (140F/60C) with detergent. Extra rinse. No laundry additives. Tumble dry low or line dry.
Dirty Storage: Remove Solids. Store in dry pail/bin. Wash soiled diapers every other day.
Note: Mineral based rash creams may stain your diapers. Cod liver oil based creams may cause odor. Use of a liner is recommended when using rash creams.
